The show must go on!

In October 2016, there were two dances at Kanata Dance Club. Christmas party happened as usual in December, haha.  2017 opened with Mardi Gras and now we organize coming Valentine's Love Day Party.  Every time, there is a lot of things going on behid the scenes to make successful dance.  We welcome other volunteers to help as much they can.  There is always something to do.  In my department of Decor, I would love to have some extra hands to deal with less technical and more artistic aspects of creating decorations.  It must be noted that there is a substantial involvement of other Directors who help me or a regular basis.  Yet, the Club needs new members to help to release those who already do a job for 3 or 4 people. It is tiring and everybody on Board of Directors feels it.

I would like to establish a new section in this blog where members of Board of Directors and other ones at large could see the process of creation of new decorations and be able to choose potential decor from ones available at local stores.  When I visit these stores, I took some pictures to document what could bought or not to forget some inspirations and ideas, since not everything is ready to use. Most of materials have to be modified and tested at out private residences.

Lately, I did some hanging decor using baloons and knitting yarns that were already fluorescent and there was no need to spray them with fluorescent paint.  I have developed a way of attaching yarn to ballons....but this is my trade secret!  Well, not much, since there are many videos on youtube how to do it.  You just...have to do it.

Kanata Dance Club

Kanata is a sub-division of Ottawa, a capital city of Canada.  I have been a member of Kanata Dance Club since May 2016 and, as a Director of Decor, I am responsible for decoration during dances.

Our club rents a dance floor from the City of Ottawa at the John Mlacak Centre 2500 Campeau Drive, Kanata (West of Teron Road),and it is open for guests around 8pm on Saturday, usually once a month.  In October 2016, there will be a second dance - Halloween Party on October 29, 2016!

Since a dance floor is rented, I have about two and half hours to prepare my decorations before dance starts and about 40 minutes to remove them after the dance is over.  All actual research and development take place way before dance night.

For many years, I have been organising and hosting many events.  I love doing lasers shows with use of water based fog and oil based hazer machines.  Making laser shows is possible when fog or haze is used and it is necessary to get a permission from a host or owner of the venue to avoid paying a visit of a local fire department crew due to fog interfering with fire detectors and triggering a fire alarm.

There is a procedure in place and after all fire prevention steps are met, it is possible to go ahead with a show. 

In Kanata Dance Club, I focus on other ways of entertaining guests using a lot of black light and neon decorations.  For some of you who attended my shows, you know how fun is to dress neon reflective outfits, shoes, skirts, shirts, pants, wigs or glasses that are visible in black light.

In a club, I mainly look after the ceiling decoration using six fluorescent light fixtures with two 48 inches black light tubes each.  Every dance, I have a different configuration of these lights and lastly, I had them in a circle formation making all my hanging decor very well visible.

I love to utilise plastic mesh tubes that perfectly reflect black light in dramatic orange, green, burgundy or white colours.  Even the white printer paper does an excellent job!
